Role Purpose

Everest is seeking a Regional General Counsel for LATAM to serve as the leader and provide strategic oversight of the Law Department’s work in Everest’s Latin American locations, which currently include Santiago, Chile; Bogotá, Colombia; and Mexico City, Mexico. The role covers the operations of Everest’s insurance subsidiaries in these countries and primarily focuses on Everest’s expanding regional insurance operations in Latin America. This role will also entail supporting, as required on occasion, Everest’s International Reinsurance business covering business underwritten for cedents domiciled in Latin America.  

The position will be a critical member of Everest’s global corporate Law Department and will report directly to the Chief of International Law based in the UK. The principal work location for this position is flexible, to be determined in consultation with the Chief of International Law, the Head of Everest’s Latin America business, and the Group General Counsel.

This role involves significant, independent interaction with senior management and business leaders, both locally in Latin America and globally across Everest. The role is focused on oversight of regional legal work, representing wider group interests in Latin America and engaging with local regulators on strategic matters. The individual will manage and work closely with the Associate General Counsels—Heads of Legal for Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, based, respectively, in Santiago, Bogotá, and Mexico City

Key Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Interaction: Interface with local regulators in Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, on strategic items and support local insurance and reinsurance management with various aspects of regulatory applications, meetings, and presentations.
  • Legal Management: Ensure legal issues impacting Everest’s expanding operations in Latin America are appropriately addressed, particularly regarding Everest’s direct insurance operations in the region, various reinsurance, compliance, employment, and commercial transactions and issues and all of the following:
  • Office Setup Assistance: Assist with all legal and regulatory aspects of setting up new office locations in Latin America, coordinating such activities with the Company’s corporate headquarters, and generally supporting Everest’s expansion initiatives in the region.
  • Governance: Oversee the effective provision of corporate secretarial services and related governance functions for Everest’s Latin America operations.
  • Contract Management: Working with the local Heads of Legal, provide direction and strategic input on the drafting, review, and negotiation of agreements with producers, insureds, and third parties.
  • Transactional Matters: Manage miscellaneous regional corporate transactional matters, including entity formation, due diligence, securities, and financial matters.
  • Dispute Management: Working with the local Heads of Legal, provide strategic oversight and direction on the resolution of non-claims disputes impacting Everest’s Latin America operations.
  • Support Underwriting Teams: Alongside the local Heads of Legal, work with Latin America underwriting teams and product development to support new transactions and product lines.
  • Miscellaneous: Handle other corporate and contractual matters as needed where regional approaches and perspectives are required.
  • Legal Counsel: Stay up to date on legal, compliance, and regulatory issues impacting Everest’s business in Latin America.
  • Operational Leadership: Provide leadership to local operational areas supporting the Latin America underwriting business (i.e., Claims, IT, Finance, Contract Wording) and contribute to wider projects involving Latin America operations in partnership with local Heads of Legal
  • Strategic Advice: Provide strategic business and legal advice regarding potential strategic acquisitions, M&A, new ventures, and territory expansions affecting the Latin America business.
  • People Leadership: Lead and manage a team of 4 direct and indirect reports. 
  • Board Membership: Serve as a member of the Board of Directors on each Latin American subsidiary of the corporate group, at the direction and pleasure of the shareholders of each subsidiary.

Skills & Competencies

  • Legal Qualification: Admitted to practice in Chile, Colombia, or Mexico with 10+ years’ relevant experience in a law firm or in-house role focusing on insurance-related matters in Latin America, with a preference for experience in non-life insurance matters.
  • Management Skills: Ability to lead an in-house legal department, with at least 5 years’ experience in a managerial role.
  • Bilingual Abilities: Full professional bilingual abilities in English and Spanish are a must.
  • Regulatory Experience: Preference for candidates with experience in the regulatory environment of Chile, Colombia, or Mexico, covering other local markets in the region.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective interfacing with all levels of management and both internal and external constituents (e.g., underwriters, claim analysts, actuaries, external counsel, brokers, etc.).
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills, analytical ability, and excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Work Ethic: Strong work ethic, ability to self-manage, and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Pressure Management: Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic and developing environment.
  • Judgment and Attitude: Common sense, good judgment, and a solution-oriented attitude toward legal issues.
  • Entrepreneurial Approach: Ability to approach complex legal issues with a sense of entrepreneurialism.
